The Olympic Torch Relay covered 8000 miles over 70 days around the UK. The torch itself was designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby in London and engineered in Coventry near Birmingham.  The designers ingeniously created a gas powered torch that burns with an orange (not a blue) flame, withstands winds of up to 30mph and has 8000 holes in the casing representing each of the 8000 Olympic Flame bearers.
Runners were nominated from all over the world and chosen according to their charity and community work.  Each of the 8000 runners carry the torch for a short distance surrounded by a cordon of Torch Security officers made up of officers from London's Metroplitan Police Force.
