Clapperboard on a white background
The traditional clapperboard was used extensively for film production around the world up until digital slates, which display timecode digits came into use in the early 21st century, The purpose of the slate is to give the film editor a point for synchronising the picture and the audio during the editing process. This was the point at which the clap was created by bringing the top arm down sharply.
